A New Mexico State University student has taken the initiative to get the population cultured and caffeinated. Cecelia Romero, a 20-year-old education major, has organized an art show at the Starbucks on Main Street, where she has been employed for about a year. The show will feature art, poetry, live music and refreshments at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
"I had always wanted to organize some kind of art show," Romero said. "I ran it past management, and they thought it was a great idea."
This is not the first art show Romero has organized in Starbucks.
"We had another art show earlier this year, but I was the only artist featured," she said. "It was also a coffee convention, so we had lots of drinks and food."
The show isn't defined as an art sale, but if patrons are interested, there are ways to purchase the works of art.
"We're not allowed to put price tags on anything," Romero said. "But if someone wants to buy anything, they can talk to the artist themselves and set something up."
Journalism and Spanish major Lindi Wilkinson, 22, will be featured in the show. Her major includes an emphasis in photography.
"I'm going to be showing a multitude of projects," Wilkinson said. "I'll show my best photos from lots of shoots, including the Balloon Fiesta, the Carnival and the equestrian team."
Wilkinson said she hopes to use this show as a learning experience.
"I want feed-back from people," Wilkinson said. "I want to learn what are their favorites and why. I want to learn to perfect my technique and learn what people want hanging on their walls."
