Sotheby's Says Art Sales Rose 51% Last Year, to $6.2 Billion, Yazzy's at www.williamverdult.com

NavahoChild.jpgAccording to Bloomberg News -- Sotheby's said its art sales rose 51 percent last year on gains in contemporary art, including $72.8 million for a Mark Rothko painting owned by David Rockefeller.

The auction house, which is run from New York, sold about $6.2 billion of art at auctions and in private transactions last year, according to an e-mailed statement today.

The total made Sotheby's about equal with its competitor Christie's International, which said it sold 3.1 billion pounds ($6.07 billion) of art in 2007 at auctions and in private sales.

Sotheby's said its auction totals were $5.4 billion, a 44 percent gain from the 2006 total.

Sotheby's, with its main salerooms in New York, is incorporated in Wilmington, Delaware. Christie's is based in London.
