According to the National Post, when a fake pipe bomb was found last night at the Royal Ontario Museum -- cancelling an AIDS fundraiser -- eyes turned to a pair of YouTube videos posted on the popular website only hours later. The videos, which appear to show the phony bomb transported to the ROM, were uploaded by a user named toadmeat. Over on Torontoist, speculation is that the person who uploaded the videos might be an OCAD student. So, does this mean the fake bomb was intended as some kind of artistic statement or alternative installation? Who knows, but if it turns out to be true, it won't be the first time someone's gotten in a lot of trouble for the sake of art:

• Earlier this year a woman was convicted of damaging a painting by American artist Cy Twombly; Rindy Sam said the kissing of the all-white painting, leaving it smudged with lipstick, was "act of love."

• Although he claimed it was art, Jesse Power, an OCAD student, and two accomplishes were convicted of the videotaped killing of a cat, an event which was chronicled in the documentary Casuistry: The Art of Killing a Cat.

• Canadian artist Istvan Kantor, a Governor General Award winner, is infamous for throwing his own blood onto art gallery walls or canvases. In 2004, he was arrested in Germany when he tried to throw his own blood on a sculpture of pop star Michael Jackson.

• British artist Banksy is notorious for his "guerilla" art, which includes murals, statues, and other stunts.

• In 1871, painter Gustave Courbet attempted to disassemble the Vendôme column in Paris.
